ABB - IoT Smart Communication Card: link to the cloud

Digitalisation a thing of the future? Well no, digitalisation is everywhere. Surely everyone wants to be part of this development? That is now easily possible with the IoT Smart Communication Card from ABB.

The IoT Smart Communication Card allows systems to connect to the third-party cloud via MQTT, OPC UA or https. The IoT Smart Communication Card offers seamless integration of smart contactors via ABB Novolink™ and all standard Modbus RTU and Modbus TCP components. This link to the cloud provides the security, speed and efficiency users desire.

Easy configuration

The IoT Smart Communication Card is easy to configure. The included Node Red low-code programming and pythoing scripts can be used to develop logic, APIs and connectivity to cloud-based systems to create smart, digitally connected applications. By default, tags are present on the device. For commissioning, it suffices to select the OPC tags the user wants to visualise and log. In daily practice, this ensures the necessary ease of use.

Secure, fast and compact

In a world where cybercrime seems to be the order of the day, digitally connected systems must be and stay safe and secure. The IoT Smart Communication Card protects companies against cyber threats with standard integrated cyber security features. For example, OPC UA communication can be authenticated and encrypted. This makes the system more resistant to cyber attacks. And because OPC UA is more than just an industrial automation protocol, the high security does not compromise flexibility. OPC UA contains an extensible information model that makes it very attractive to many markets.

Space in panels and switchboards is becoming increasingly scarce due to increasing digitisation rates and multiple components. Therefore, smart use of available space is not always easy. The IoT Smart Communication Card is compact and offers ample opportunity to optimise space usage on panels.

Besides optimal use of space, the IoT Smart Communication Card also guarantees short installation times. Thanks to optimised numbers of wiring connections and installation methods, the IoT Smart Communication Card can be installed efficiently and effectively. The user-friendly web tool not only simplifies the configuration and commissioning of the communication card but also speeds up projects in the process.

Easy to integrate

The IoT Smart Communication Card can be integrated with Novolink to make data available to cloud-based environments. For example, the Novolink™ modules make it easy to digitise motor start solutions and provide insight into connected loads.  With the Novolink modules, more is possible than measuring and recording. The modules also enable predictive maintenance to reduce downtime and increase efficiency.

Signaal 64 - Boon Edam - Toegang tot VMI en een groot assortiment
Boon Edam, known for its revolving doors and turnstiles, picked itsme as their main electrical components supplier last year. The large product range and the vendor managed inventory (VMI) solution for the grab stock of electrical assembly materials were the deciding factors. “When you install VMI, you actually do it forever.”

Connected Business - Vendor Managed Inventory
The Lean improvement method distinguishes eight waste categories. One of these is 'inventory'. Too much stock is not good, but neither is too little. After all, having stock also provides the safe feeling of availability in times of uncertain internal planning and external factors that cannot be directly influenced. Because optimising availability both in one's own company and in the supply chain is often not the core competence of our customers, itsme can take over the care of such optimisation, for example through the import and management of so-called Vendor Managed Inventory systems. But, how do you know whether VMI is indeed the right solution? Ralph van Aartsen can answer that crucial question - using five questions. Here, in advance, are his answers to our questions on VMI.
