ETHERLINE® GUARD – monitor the real-time performance of your data cables
Cables usually last many years, but in highly dynamic applications with high speeds, accelerations and possibly torsion, it can be beneficial and cost-effective to monitor the connections to avoid production downtime.
LAPP's solution is the ETHERLINE® GUARD: an innovative device that constantly monitors the real-time performance of a communication line and compares the measured values of various parameters with the initial values. In this way, we get a good picture of cable degeneration. The ETHERLINE® GUARD is primarily intended for 100BASE-TX connections (at 100 Mbit/s), for EtherCAT, EtherNET/IP and 2-pair PROFINET. In many industries, these cables are used at the process level of an application. They are often found in cable tracks, CNC machines and multi-axis robots. The ETHERLINE® GUARD is suitable for top-hat rail mounting and can be used in industrial control cabinets thanks to its IP20 protection class.
The ETHERLINE® GUARD is available as a WiFi variant or LAN variant that transmits diagnostic data to a higher control level. Both variants have a compact design and can be configured for cloud communication with MQTT. The external SMA antenna connection ensures a secure radio link when the unit is located in the control cabinet, for example. It operates on 24 V DC, is designed for a temperature range of -40 °C to +75 °C and is vibration- and shock-resistant according to DIN EN 60529. It is connected via an input and output on an existing line, between the (critical) application and a controller or switch. So no assembly or disassembly in the field, just switch the device between them via RJ45 connections. 
Commissioning is initiated at the touch of a button or via the web interface with automated and self-learning parameterisation. LAPP's patented predictive maintenance algorithms make it easy to detect irregularities in the analysed data. The ETHERLINE® GUARD continuously diagnoses the cable and displays the status via an LED: permanent green is OK, flashing is a warning, red is immediate replacement. The alarm threshold is factory-set to 80 per cent, but can be individually set between 99 per cent and 21 per cent.
